“Adipose: Of or relating to fat. / Positivity: Characterized by or displaying acceptance or affirmation.”
When Substantia Jones set out to create her photo series, The Adipositivity Project she knew she wanted to create change – she just wasn’t sure what that change would be.
As the photo shoot progressed it all became clear. Folks of size are just as worthy of love and sex and appreciation as those more svelte. There people who prefer their partners to be trim, taught and terrific, but also those who like their partners on the chunkier side.
From the comments at the bottom of the photos there are those who are disgusted. Then avert your eyes and go look at something that you find more gratifying.
There are also those claiming that fat is unhealthy and no one should be promoting it. To them I would say that no one is suggesting that we should all be overweight. However we live in a not-so-perfect world and some things just ‘are’. There is a minority that fit the perfect ideal and if you fit into that category, that’s lovely.
However the rest of us are thinner/fatter/shorter/taller than the ideal. Some of us are disabled, some of us have crooked teeth, some are albino, some wear glasses and hearing aids, some are intellectually challenged – but all should be celebrated because we are all so much more than the shell we inhabit.
